Dr. Ashton Stanton on Physiatry

In this series our physical therapists interview physicians practising in the community. Dr. Stanton is an outside guest, not a member of the Greiner Physical Therapy staff.

The specialist most back-pain patients have never heard of.

Seth Greiner, PT, founder of Greiner Physical Therapy, sits down with Dr. Ashton Stanton, a fellowship-trained physiatrist, for a conversation about physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Stanton is a guest on this series and is not a member of our staff.

Physiatry is the gap most people fall into. You know about surgeons and you know about physical therapists, and in between sits a physician whose whole specialty is managing musculoskeletal conditions, injury recovery and pain without going straight to the operating room. This episode explains what that doctor does and when it is worth seeing one.

The practical half is about your back. Dr. Stanton covers preventing back injuries in the first place, and building the right care team around a recovery. Our back pain and sciatica page picks up where the interview leaves off.

The right treatment, at the right time.

"My approach to spine and musculoskeletal care is to be aggressive with diagnosis and conservative with treatment."

What the conversation gets into.

The scope of physiatry

What a physiatrist does across musculoskeletal conditions, injury recovery and pain management.

Preventing back injuries

Dr. Stanton’s advice on avoiding the back injury rather than rehabbing it twice.

PRP injections and your care team

The growing use of platelet-rich plasma injections in his practice, and why the right team, from physiatrist to physical therapist, decides how well a recovery goes. PRP is not a service we provide.

Are You Still Waiting for It to Go Away on Its Own?

Back pain that has lasted months rarely resolves by being ignored for another one. Start with a full one-on-one evaluation with a licensed physical therapist and leave with a plan you understand.

No referral is needed in New York for up to 30 days or 10 visits. We are in network with Medicare and Medicare Advantage, out of network with most other plans, and we submit claims on your behalf.
