Dr. Carine Maurer on Parkinson’s Care

In this series our physical therapists interview physicians practising in the community. Dr. Maurer is an outside guest, not a member of the Greiner Physical Therapy staff.

What good Parkinson’s care looks like when everyone talks to each other.

Seth Greiner, PT, MSPT, sits down with Dr. Carine Maurer, a movement disorder specialist and associate professor of neurology, to talk about what interdisciplinary Parkinson’s care actually requires. Dr. Maurer is a guest on this series. She does not work for our practice and does not see patients at our clinics.

The conversation is unusually practical for a neurology interview. They cover early diagnosis, why a personalised treatment plan beats a standard one, and how a support team, medical and rehabilitative and family, changes the arc of the disease. Dr. Maurer keeps returning to the same point: patients who understand their condition and keep exercising do better.

That is the part we live in. Seth is head coach of Rock Steady Boxing Hampton Bays, and our Parkinson’s page and Rock Steady Boxing page explain how the exercise side of this gets delivered week to week.

The full interview.

Worth watching in full if you or someone in your family has been recently diagnosed.

What the two of them get into.

Parkinson’s care as a team sport

Early diagnosis, personalised treatment plans, and when and how to seek out a specialist.

Deep brain stimulation and Botox for dystonia

Two medical options Dr. Maurer discusses from her own practice, with real patient examples. Neither is a service we provide.

Exercise and boxing groups

Why exercise is a lifestyle tool for managing progression, including group programs such as Parkinson’s boxing, plus the resources available through Stony Brook’s movement disorders program.

Start the Exercise Side of the Plan

If you or a family member is living with Parkinson’s, the exercise half of the plan should not wait for the next neurology appointment. Every session here is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, and Seth coaches the Rock Steady Boxing class himself.

No referral is needed in New York for up to 30 days or 10 visits. Tell us on the form who we are helping, the patient or the person caring for them.
