Dr. Peter Imperato, PT, DPT

Peter is an orthopedic manual therapist who wants you to understand your own body by the time you leave. He treats with his hands and explains the mechanism as he goes.

A therapist who has to know how the thing works.

Peter earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Buffalo and completed his physical therapy education at Stony Brook University. He has worked in outpatient therapy since 2019, and he holds a post-doctorate certification as an orthopedic manual therapist.

He came to the profession through an injury of his own. He got hurt in a recreational flag football game, was treated by a young therapist, and saw what physical therapy could actually do. He describes himself as someone who needs to understand how a system works before changing anything, whether that is a patient, a car or a house, and he treats the same way: find the root cause, then fix it.

Peter sets high expectations and asks patients to stay open to new strategies, because the plan only works if you are in it with him. He is one of eleven kids, which is probably why he can talk to anyone. Outside the clinic he is mountain biking, swimming, fishing or hiking, and his favorite movies are the Rocky series.

What he brings into the room.

Education, certification and the parts of the job he likes most.

Stony Brook University

His physical therapy education, following an undergraduate degree from the University of Buffalo.

Orthopedic Manual Therapist

A post-doctorate certification in manual therapy, which is why his sessions are mostly hands-on.

Return to Sport

His favorite patients are the ones getting back to a sport, rebuilding strength, mobility and agility.

Teaching as Treatment

He educates patients about their own bodies so they can read their own signals and hold on to pain-free movement.

What Peter treats.

His manual skills are the centre of his treatment style. He is proficient in a range of hands-on techniques that promote healing, restore range of motion and improve how a joint actually functions under load.

The conditions he most enjoys working with are lower back pain, knee pain, throwing injuries, sciatica and neck pain. He takes a nontraditional approach and expects patients to participate actively in their own recovery.

No referral needed in New York for up to 30 days or 10 visits. In network with Medicare and Medicare Advantage, out of network with most other plans, and we submit claims on your behalf. Same-week appointments are usually available at both locations.

Asking for Peter.

You can request Peter by name when you book, and whoever you start with is who you keep. There are no handoffs to an assistant or an aide here, so the person who evaluates you is the person who treats you through discharge.

If you are not sure who fits, tell us what is going on when you call and we will match you with the therapist whose focus lines up, at whichever of our two locations is easier for you.

What his patients say.

"The most incredible PT I have ever experienced. Peter Imperato is the best therapist."
