Arthritis Treatment in Quogue, NY

You were told it is wear and tear and to take it easy. Taking it easy is part of why the joint hurts more now. We build the motion and strength the joint needs to carry you.

Arthritis is not the reason you stopped moving. Most of the pain arrived after you did.

Cartilage thins, the joint surfaces lose some of their glide, and the joint lets you know. That much is real, and we are not going to tell you we can regrow cartilage. What turns a cranky joint into a smaller life is the loop that follows it: moving hurts, so you move less, so the muscles around the joint get weaker and shorter, so the joint itself absorbs more of every step, so it hurts more.

That loop is exactly where physical therapy works. We restore the motion the joint has quietly given up, load the muscles around it until they carry what they are meant to carry, and change the mechanics that grind one side of the joint harder than the other. The diagnosis does not change. What the joint can tolerate does.

Which joint and which kind of arthritis both matter. Osteoarthritis behaves differently from an inflammatory arthritis, and a knee that hurts because the hip above it stopped rotating needs the hip treated. Your evaluation sorts that out before anything gets prescribed, and we work alongside your physician or rheumatologist rather than around them.

Arthritis treatment at Greiner Physical Therapy

The pattern most arthritic joints follow.

If you recognise four of these six, the joint is being asked to do a job the muscles around it have stopped helping with.

Worst first thing

Stiffness in the morning or after sitting a while, easing once you have moved around for a few minutes.

A deep ache with load

Pain that builds with stairs, hills, standing on a hard floor, or the back nine.

Swelling and warmth

The joint puffs up after activity and feels warm or full rather than sharply painful.

Range that keeps shrinking

You cannot fully straighten, bend or rotate the joint, and the loss crept in so slowly you adapted to it.

Weakness and wobble

The leg feels unreliable getting out of a low chair, and the joint feels like it could let go.

A list of things you dropped

The walk, the garden, the doubles game. You stopped them one at a time and called it age.

How we treat arthritis without telling you to rest.

The first visit is an evaluation, not a treatment protocol handed off to someone else. We find which joints are actually involved, where motion is limited, which muscles have gone quiet, and how you walk, squat and stand, because that is what decides how the joint gets loaded a thousand times a day.

Then the hands-on work: joint mobilization to restore glide, soft tissue work for the muscles that have shortened around the joint, and manual therapy to make motion available before we ask you to use it. Strength work follows, at a dose the joint tolerates and progresses week to week. Gait and balance training changes how load lands. Massage therapy and heat or ice have a place in calming a flare, but they are the setup, never the plan.

You also leave with something you can run yourself: joint protection strategies, pacing that lets you do the thing you care about without paying for it for three days, and a home program in the app our patients actually use.

No referral needed in New York for up to 30 days or 10 visits. In network with Medicare and Medicare Advantage, out of network with most other plans, and we submit claims on your behalf. Same-week appointments are usually available at both locations.

What a course of arthritis care looks like here.

Pain: make motion possible again

We calm the irritated joint and restore the range it has lost, by hand, before asking anything of it. Most people can feel the difference in what the joint will do within the first few visits.

Prime: build the muscle that takes the load off the joint

Strength for the muscles that surround and stabilise the joint, added in doses it can tolerate and progressed every week. This is the part that changes how the joint feels on stairs and hills.

Prevent: a plan you will still be doing in a year

Pacing, joint protection, footwear and a short home program built around what you actually want to keep doing. Arthritis is a long game and the plan has to be one you can keep.

Questions about arthritis.

01 / Do I need a referral from my doctor to start?
No. New York has direct access, so you can see a licensed physical therapist for up to 30 days or 10 visits, whichever comes first, without a referral. Many of our arthritis patients are also under the care of a physician or rheumatologist, and we are glad to coordinate with them.
02 / Should I really be exercising a joint that hurts?
Yes, with the right dose and the right movements, which is the whole job. Load that is graded and specific builds the muscle that unloads the joint. Load that is random or too heavy too soon flares it. That is the difference between an exercise sheet and a licensed therapist watching what your joint does.
03 / Will physical therapy let me avoid a joint replacement?
We will not promise that, and anyone who does is guessing. What therapy reliably does is improve motion, strength and function, which either postpones the conversation or puts you into surgery in far better shape if you do have it. Patients who arrive strong recover faster afterward.
04 / How does insurance work?
We are in network with Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and out of network with most other plans, and we submit claims on your behalf. Medicaid is not accepted. Typical care runs two to three visits per week for a minimum of four to six weeks, and we will be straight with you about cost before you begin.

What our patients say.

"Seth is practically a miracle worker! I am in less pain and have better range of motion than I have had in decades! Literally. This far exceeds my expectations!"
